Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been genning up on their already pretty solid Google Analytics knowledge in order to take the Analytics certification exam on the Google partners site.
I think it was a useful thing for us to do. It’s further evidence that we do actually know what we’re doing and can help people get the best from their digital marketing. It’s certainly not too easy (unless you cheat and Google Google’s answers, which you would have plenty of time to do), though most of the difficulties are caused by what are pretty much trick questions rather than by the difficulty of the material.

We recently attended the Huntingdon Business Fair and were really pleased to see both the variety and strength of the business community inside Huntingdonshire and the surrounding area. Whilst we were there we were offering a free website performance audit to anyone who left us a business card which was well received. Some interesting results occurred from this. Generally speaking, connections to the internet are getting quicker, however, this doesn’t seem to have resulted in faster website/web services, just more and more being sent to users. However, there are things that developers (and clients) can relatively easily do to drastically improve their website performance, which we have been mentioning in our blog recently.

Recently we’ve been working on updating our clients page, which required us to think, for the first time in a while, “what do people want from a clients page?”.
Our first thought as developers was to start bashing out lengthy case studies documenting the finer points of Drupal Commerce configuration and Apache Solr setups, but then we remembered we weren’t writing them for our benefit and went back to the drawing board.

In 2014, Will Hall Online took on several new members of staff and undertook several of its biggest projects yet. It was an exciting year for the business, but was not without its challenges. One of the most significant of these was an ever-increasing administrative workload resulting from this growth.
To help manage our operations, we’ve adopted a range of technologies which help us to track the amount of time we spend on projects, communicate issues with clients, and maintain our social media presence. They’re now pretty central to what we do, so we thought we’d throw out a few thoughts on some of them to see how our experiences compare with others.

Will Hall Online are excited to announce that we will now be offering both development AND design in house from March 2014.
Why now? Regularly our services are employed by Web Design agencies offering web development but not being able to deliver the functionality required by their clients. Having worked with a vast number of designers we feel that it is in the best interest of our clients that we offer the both design and development as part of our service. An opportunity has arisen which has made it the perfect time to bring a designer onto the team.

Getting accurate details from users about the setup of their system can be difficult. Often the quizzical user may suggest “it doesn’t look like that on my computer” or “can you make it bigger on the screen”, however, when you ask what browser, screen size, operating system they are using it can be possible to get a blank look. In fact I am sure we can all appreciate that some people think of Internet Explorer as the internet.

Will Hall Online has featured in the Anglia Ruskin University Alumni magazine for our work with Integro Languages. We are building a CRM system using Drupal to enable more efficient and scalable management of their translation and interpretation business. We are proud to be working with Integro Languages especially because it maintains links with our previous university.
I had a fabulous time, both academically and socially, whilst at university in Cambridge and seeing the progress of others who you shared accomodation, lectures and student bars with is a great validation of education. Although my first degree, in History, was not entirely focussed on my career now, I find that it has certainly given me skills towards analytical thinking and evaluation of tasks that may not have been as forthcoming with a computer science degree. Of course I am a member of two university Alumni’s, both ARU and Leeds Metropolitan University, for my MSc in Web Application Development. Hearing of the sucesses of both universities is great and I hope it will continue in the future.

Have you heard about the Mindful Employer Initiative? Nither had I until now. Launched in 2004, the “MINDFUL EMPLOYER® is open to any employer in the UK, whether small, medium or large, private, public or voluntary sector…and provides information, advice and practical support for people whose mental health affects their ability to find or remain in employment.”
When you have signed up to the Charter for Employers who are Positive About Mental Health, or if you are a supporting organisation who has signed their Partnership Agreement, you will then be able to use the MINDFUL EMPLOYER® Registered Trade Mark to show your commitment to the initiative.

Now that got your attention!
You’ll notice that I didn’t use the term Mental Health or Well-being in the title of this article. This was a conscious decision some may not agree with but unfortunately there is still a stigma attached to the issues of mental health, and many people feel uncomforatble talking about it. The word well-being has negative connotations of its own, including those who associate this term with a somewhat ‘fluffy’ or ‘soft’ approach, even conjuring up images of yoga, meditation and old-fashioned teambuilding exercises. Hopefully, this article will give you more information to demystify these troublesome and awkward terms and empower you to be able to deal with MH issues, and seek support when necessary.
