Vibe Coding Projects Are Like Real World Projects

Vibe Coding Projects Are Like Real World Projects

Friday, Jun 27, 2025
One of the things that really makes me smile about the rise of “vide-coding” or AI-assisted coding is that it works best when your projects are already well-built. The things I’ve been preaching for the last 15 years still matter. In fact, they might matter more than ever. Clean structure, consistent standards, good documentation, clear versioning, helpful comments, embedded security, and human-readable code aren’t just best practices they are enablers. Whether you’re working with a team of humans or an AI that’s pretending to be one, these principles make everything smoother. They reduce friction, prevent confusion, and allow tools (and teammates) to reason about your work more effectively. ...

Life Goals: Peeling an Orange in 1

Life Goals: Peeling an Orange in 1

Thursday, Apr 3, 2025
A fun one for the afternoon. I often talk to my kids about goals. You know the kind—SMART goals, growth goals, stretch goals, and all the other acronyms we’ve seen in workbooks or performance reviews. I try to keep those conversations simple and relatable, especially when it’s just casual chats over dinner or on the school run. And when I think about the goals I share with them, there’s always one that I bring up regularly. ...

Doesn't Seem that Return-To-Office is Happening Very Quickly

Doesn't Seem that Return-To-Office is Happening Very Quickly

Tuesday, Feb 11, 2025
It’s been fascinating to watch the ongoing debate around “return to office” (RTO) versus “work from home” (WFH) unfold over the past couple of years. There’s been no shortage of opinions—executives calling people back, employees pushing back, media stories with loaded headlines—but in many cases, the conversation has felt more political or emotional than data-driven. That’s why it’s so refreshing to come across broader, US-centric data that cuts through the noise and shows us what’s actually happening. ...

My Internet History in Web Browsers

My Internet History in Web Browsers

Thursday, Apr 18, 2019
I was recalling recently of my history with the Internet. Having been both an active user and developer for at least the last 23 years (that seems strange), I think that there is nothing that so completely has dominated my internet life as the browser that I have been using. Year to Browser Use (Percentage) Year Internet Explorer Firefox Chrome Chromium Brave 2000 100 2001 100 2002 100 2003 100 2004 100 2005 50 50 2006 10 90 2007 10 90 2008 10 50 40 2009 20 80 2010 20 80 2011 20 80 2012 20 80 2013 20 80 2014 20 80 2015 20 80 2016 20 50 30 2017 20 50 10 20 2018 30 10 60 2019 30 70 2000-2005 - The PC Years In the early PC year (which probably stretch before 2000), my PC life was dominated by Microsoft. I remember making web pages in Frontpage and IE6 (which was pretty great at the time). I believe that I experimented with Netscape, however, moving off the Microsoft ecosystem was not really a big thing. ...

What I Learnt Building and Selling My First Application

What I Learnt Building and Selling My First Application

Tuesday, Feb 13, 2018
There is a lot of discussion around the amount of money that is inside the tech industry. Although there is money to be made it is not without the trials and tribulations of selling software. This is my story of selling my first application and some of the lessons learnt. Although this was not my first built application, it was the first application that I built without request from clients. ...

Digital: The Stack and The Roles

Digital: The Stack and The Roles

Sunday, Jun 4, 2017
The most recent buzz word around is digital, however, it is often used as a catch all term for almost anything that is related to computers. So, what is the scope of digital and where do different roles exist inside the landscape? Generally speaking, I term digital to be anything that uses the wider Internet, however, that does not mean anything that is networked. So, simply accessing a file server is not using digital services, however, using a web application to access a file server is. ...

A Busy Week At Will Hall Online

A Busy Week At Will Hall Online

Friday, Oct 23, 2015
This week has certainly been a busy week at Will Hall Online, with Stephanie and Will out of the office at two different events, The Beds SME Expo and The ARU Computer Science Employers Forum. So we thought a great time to do a bit of feedback from both. Beds SME Expo The Beds SME Expo is a Small and Medium size exhibition/business fair based in Bedfordshire to allow businesses to network and look for potential customers and clients in the Bedford B2C scene. Firstly, we have been to Beds SME Expos before and had a great time and made some useful contacts so that was great but an additional factor this time was that it was at the new Center Parcs at Woburn Forest, which was great to have a look round and we would highly recommend for future business venues and have reasonable rates for conferences and bookings. ...

Developer KPI's - in High Fives!

Developer KPI's - in High Fives!

Friday, Oct 9, 2015
Over the recent weeks we have been restructuring the business and especially how we can measure employees performance. The measurement of performance is not a new thing and I am sure that most of you have heard of KPI as a way of being able to see how effectively you are working at a role. However, with development we found it difficult to think up any KPI’s or metrics that a developer could be judged upon. Sure as a systems admin, you could look at uptime and resiliance, but how do you measure the creativity or problem solving nature of being a developer; where sometimes the same answer takes either 2 minutes or 2 weeks? ...

If You Haven't Learned How To Use The Internet Yet, It's Probably Too Late

Thursday, Oct 1, 2015
I’ve recently started running a course called Computers for the Clueless (name chosen by the local education authority), which is aimed at helping people who’ve not really used computers before to be able to do some basics. For me, basics covers using the keyboard and the mouse effectively, using the operating system (in this case Windows 7), CRUD tasks for files, and a few internet tasks including general navigation and sending and receiving emails. ...
